The Lesser Spotted Dogfish is a small shark, it is sometimes known as Rock Salmon in fish mongers. It’s rough skin can cause an anglers skin a nasty abrasion if handled incorrectly during unhooking. They are distinguished from the Greater Spotted Dogfish or Bull Huss by it’s single nasal flap and the base of the anal fin and front of the second dorsal fin are in line.
Most anglers don’t specifically target this species, but it’s nearly impossible for those targeting other species not to come across this plentiful fish on occasion.
The Dogfish is a bottom feeder, feeding mostly on Crustaceans and small fish. The Dogfish is prolific for practically the whole year.
